Taliban Authorities and Pakistan Report Multiple Fatalities in Fresh Border Fighting
Fresh fighting broke out along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border early on Wednesday morning, with both parties accusing the opposing side of initiating deadly confrontations.
The Pakistani military announced that its troops had eliminated "15-20 Afghan Taliban" and wounded many in the Spin Boldak frontier area.
A Taliban government representative said that twelve non-combatants had been killed and over a hundred wounded by Pakistani firing. He added that numerous Pakistani soldiers had been lost their lives. Not one of the reported deaths could be independently confirmed.
Hostilities between the neighbors has escalated since blasts rocked Afghanistan last week, which Kabul blamed on Islamabad. The Taliban reject claims that it is harboring militants targeting Pakistan.
Social Media and Military Confrontations
The two sides are not only battling for the upper hand on the frontier, but also on social media, attempting to persuade the public that their side is causing more damage.
The latest fighting come after severe border confrontations over the past few days, when the Taliban claimed to have eliminated 58 members of the Pakistani military and Islamabad said it killed 200 "Taliban and affiliated insurgents". The claimed death tolls announced by each side could not be confirmed by external sources.
Several days of fragile peace that had lasted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday morning.
Local Accounts and Impact
Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been shared online and on social channels, including footage claiming to be of those deceased and blurry shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of check posts destroyed. These videos have not been verified.
A source in the border area in Afghanistan reported that fighting broke out at around 04:00 local time (11:30 p.m. GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, reported that "very heavy clashes continued for almost five hours".
"We observed unmanned aircraft and jets soaring over us, some of our relatives are injured," they said.
A doctor in one of the hospitals in Spin Boldak reported that he counted "seven fatalities and 36 wounded brought to the hospital", including males, females and children.
The circumstances were "strained" and additional victims were being taken to medical care, he said.
Evacuations and Global Reactions
A regional Taliban official in Spin Boldak stated that "numerous of households have been forced to flee since the previous evening due to the heavy fighting". He said they were on "high alert" after a few Taliban posts were targeted by Pakistani jets. He added that they had the remains of two armed forces members.
In a distinct night-time clash on Pakistan's north-western frontier, the Islamabad's forces claimed that twenty-five to thirty militant and local insurgent fighters were "believed" to have been killed.
The hostilities have led to appeals for de-escalation from other countries including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to broker peace.
On that day, a UN official, United Nations representative on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on a social media platform that he was "very worried" by reports of non-combatant deaths and displacement because of the fighting.
"I urge everyone involved to practice maximum restraint, protect civilians, and abide by global regulations," he wrote.
Historical Disputes
Islamabad has long alleged the Taliban authorities of permitting the Pakistan Taliban to operate from their territory and fight against the Pakistani administration in an attempt to impose a rigid religion-based system of governance.
The Taliban leadership has consistently denied this.
