New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
